PENANG is spending RM1.65mil to upgrade the running track at the Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) Sports and Recreational Complex in Jalan Betek, Bukit Mertajam.

State youth and sports committee chairman Soon Lip Chee said upgrading work, which began on Oct 11, would be completed by Dec 19 this year.

He said the allocation would also be spent on upgrading the drainage system, as well as on facilities and equipment for track and field events like steeplechase, long and triple jump, shot putt, hammer and discus throw, and pole vault.

He added that the upgrading would meet the Standard World Athletics and International Association of Athletics Federation requirements upon completion in 10 weeks’ time.

“It is timely considering the running track here has not been upgraded for the past 15 years.

“Before this, there were cases where state athletes were injured during training sessions at this track.

“So, the upgrading work is urgently needed.

“It is also for our athletes’ convenience and safety when they undergo training at this track,” Soon was quoted by Buletin Mutiara during a site visit recently.

Also present were Padang Lalang assemblyman Chong Eng, who is also the state social development and non-Islamic religious affairs committee chairman, and Penang Sports Council director Harry Chai Heng Hua.
